Benguela Cove Estate Collage is an ode to traditional ageing. Where other Bordeaux-style blends seek heaviness, this Collage variant offers impressive depth and a richer mouthfeel through the cool maritime influences of the Atlantic Ocean. 

This wine has spent 18 to 20 months ageing in the finest French oak casks (of which around 45% are new), resulting in a velvety wine full of notes of blackcurrants, graphite and a recognisable saline feel. Bottled at 14,5% for just that little extra power and character.

Benguela Cove Estate Collage: A masterpiece of composition

The Benguela Cove Estate Collage is considered by many to be the 'sweet spot' of the estate in the Walker Bay region. After almost two years' rest in the cool cellars on the edge of the lagoon, the wine has allowed its individual components to merge into mature elegance. What makes this release special is the exceptionally careful selection process, in which each grape variety is vinified separately to reach its optimal potential before the final 'collage' is formed.

At Brouwhoeve, we appreciate the Collage for its complex simplicity. It is an honest wine that has been given time to breathe and develop its characteristic layers of violets and cedarwood. The combination of the five different grape varieties provides a considerably fuller texture and a more intense tasting experience than many other blends from the region. This is a classic 'cool climate' Bordeaux blend that shows craftsmanship and the influence of the nearby ocean are always rewarded with exceptional refinement.

Flavour & character

Aroma An intense and enticing bouquet. Immediately recognisable are the rich notes of blackberries, plums and blackcurrants, complemented by aromas of violets, cedarwood and a subtle spiciness of marzipan, liquorice and tobacco leaves.

Taste The mouthfeel is full, oily and warming. On the palate, layers of dark fruit, graphite and a striking saline minerality remain beautifully balanced with the firm yet silky-smooth tannins. The 14,5% alcohol provides a beautiful structure in which the fresh acidity combines perfectly with the complex, spicy core.

Finish A long, elegant finish. The intense notes of berries and cedar slowly fade away and make way for a warm memory of oak and mild spices.


Serving tips & pairings

  • Breathe: The best way to allow the layered complexity to show fully at its best is to decant the wine at least one hour before serving.

  • Temperature: Preferably serve this blend between 16°C and 18°C in a generous Bordeaux glass.

  • Gastronomy: Excellent with robust dishes such as lamb, osso buco or roast game. Also fantastic alongside a chocolate fondant with a red-fruit centre.

  • Moment: This is the ideal wine for a special dinner or an evening where the complexity of the Collage composition can take centre stage fully.
