Benguela Cove Lighthouse Syrah is an ode to traditional ageing. Where other Syrahs often seek excess, this variant offers impressive depth and a richer mouthfeel through the cool maritime influences of the Atlantic Ocean. 

This wine has spent 12 to 14 months in the finest French oak casks, resulting in a velvety wine full of notes of dark plums, white pepper and a recognisable floral feel. Bottled at 14,5% for just that little extra power and character.

Benguela Cove Lighthouse Syrah: Maritime spice

The Benguela Cove Lighthouse Syrah is considered by many to be the 'sweet spot' of the red Lighthouse collection. After careful ageing in the cellars on the edge of the lagoon, the wine has allowed its individual character of robust tannins to merge into mature elegance. What makes this release special is the focus on preserving the natural aromas of the Syrah grape; thanks to the cool nights in Walker Bay, the wine retains its typical peppery character and lively acidity.

At Brouwhoeve, we appreciate this Syrah for its complex simplicity. It is an honest wine that has been given time to breathe and form its characteristic layers of violets and lavender. The combination of modern vinification techniques and subtle oak maturation provides a considerably fuller texture and a more intense tasting experience than many other Syrahs from warmer regions. This is a classic South African red wine that shows craftsmanship and a maritime climate always lead to exceptional refinement.

Flavour & character

Aroma An intense and enticing bouquet. Immediately recognisable are the rich notes of dark plums and mulberries, complemented by aromas of white pepper, violets and a subtle spicy touch of dried fynbos and black olives.

Taste The mouthfeel is full, oily and warming. On the palate, layers of black fruit, liquorice and a striking suppleness remain beautifully balanced with the fine-grained tannins. The 14,5% alcohol provides a beautiful structure in which the spicy nuances remain beautifully balanced with the fruity core.

Finish A long, elegant finish. The fresh notes of blackcurrants and pepper slowly fade away and make way for a warm memory of oak and mild spices.


Serving tips & pairings

  • Serving: The ideal way to allow the aromas to show fully at their best is to serve the wine between 16°C and 18°C in a generous wine glass.

  • Breathe: Decanting the wine around 30 minutes before drinking will further accentuate the complex floral and spicy notes.

  • Gastronomy: Excellent with grilled lamb, game dishes or a spicy stew. Also fantastic alongside dishes with roasted beetroot or a board of savoury blue cheeses.

  • Moment: This is the ideal wine for a cosy dinner or an evening where the balance between maritime freshness and spicy power can take centre stage fully.
